Scuffing load capacity calculation of worm gears

Abstract Worm gears with wheels of harder materials, such as cast iron or steel, are often prone to the damage type scuffing, which can cause a sudden and rapid failure gear box. Contact temperature is suitable criterion determine scuffing safety for other types gears. However, worm gears, load capacity calculation not available at moment. This paper presents numerical simulation that considers transient multidimensional heat transfer local frictional loading due contact. Based on results this simulation, derives simplified contact temperatures. The only contains input parameters already part current standards. Its result, be used rate capacity.
